Virgílio Falco

Virgilio Falco is Assistant Professor of Oenology in the Department of Agronomy, at the School of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences (ECAV) of the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD). He is a member of the  Centre for the Research and Technology of Agro-Environmental and Biological Sciences (CITAB), at the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD), and the Laboratory for Green Chemistry (LAQV) of the Network of Chemistry and Technology (REQUIMTE), at the Universidade of Porto (UP). He teaches various courses on Winemaking Technology and the Analytical Control of Wines, and has been collaborating with several entities in the wine sector, including the Organization Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin (OIV). Simultaneously, he underwent post-graduate training in instrumental methods of wine analysis at the Forschungsanstalt Geisenheim, Germany, and underwent further training in instrumental and sensorial methods of wine and grape analysis at Estação Vitivinícola Nacional (INIA-EVN), Portugal, and at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station (NYSAES) – Cornell University, USA. Since joining the Department of Agronomy at UTAD in 2009, he has been actively involved in scientific and technical projects related to the optimization of wine production conditions and the quality of wines, as well as the effects of climate change on grape and wine composition.
